This topic can be a major pinch point in a family's monthly budget. I can help!

The risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among teens aged 16–19 than among any other age group. In fact, per mile driven, teen drivers in this age group are nearly three times as likely as drivers aged 20 or older to be in a fatal crash. The presence of other teens or young adult passengers increases this risk.
What factors contribute to these high risks?
Inexperience
Nighttime/Weekend driving-
Not using seat belts
Distracted Driving
Speeding
Alcohol and/or drug use
When should I add my Teenage driver?
This can vary by carrier(so check with them to confirm) but generally the rule of thumb is the day your teenager gets licensed.
What can you do to minimize your premium increase?
Drivers Safety Course- in many states, teenager drivers are required to take a drivers safety/education course prior to getting their license. If not, have them take the course locally or virtually. Classes run about $35 and the certification remains effective on your insurance for up to 3 years( where allowed).
Good Grades(3.0 or higher, check with your carrier)-the good grade discount is quite significant. Most carriers ask for a 3.0 or higher, but its best to verify with your agent or carrier to confirm. The discount does typically require proof of record by submitting transcripts semi annually or annually.
Limit driving during busier traffic hours- nights and weekends- Low mileage- limit the amount of mile and or drive time for your young driver. Statistics show that most accidents involving 16-19 aged drivers fall on Friday-Sunday from 9pm to 6am.
Limit additional passengers- distracted driving is the leading cause of accidents in the U.S. and this also increases the odds of your teen crashing three fold.
Maintain a clean driving record- allowing yourself enough time to get to your destination and driving defensively will help keep your driving record clean
Telematics- enroll in telematics. A 90 day glimpse into driving habits can reduce your premium sup to 30%,and that isn't just on your teenage drivers premium.
New or newer used vehicles with high safety ratings and/or Liability Coverage- safety features and great crash statics for vehicles is a big rating factor for vehicle insurance premiums. Really old vehicles wont always keep your premiums down, so compare rates of vehicles before making the purchase. If you are in a position to find a newer used vehicle and also insure it with liability coverage only with the combination of a couple items listed above, you may have just found your sweet spot in rates.
No matter what your situation is, it is important to have these conversations not only with your insurance agent, but with your teen as well. If you would like to schedule a time for us sit down with you and your teen to discuss this more, feel free to reach us via email, text, ot phone.
